To register as a voter in South Dakota, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of South Dakota
  • Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Not have been officially found mentally incompetent
  • Not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction*

* If you've been convicted of a felony, you may still be able to vote. See the official guidelines.

Where do I vote on Election Day?

On Election Day, you can cast your ballot at your designated precinct voting location.

To find yours, visit the South Dakota Polling Place Finder.

All polling places will be open between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.

Can I vote by mail?

Any registered voter in South Dakota can request an absentee ballot to vote by mail!

Absentee ballot requests must be received by November 5th,
and returned no later than November 5th.

I'm in college away from home, which state do I vote in?

You can either register to vote in South Dakota or the state you're attending school in — but not both!

I'm not in the US right now, how do I vote?

If you are a military voter or a United States citizen living abroad, you should request an overseas absentee ballot.

What ID do I need to vote?

Voter ID is required when voting. One of the following forms is acceptable:

  • South Dakota driver's license or photo ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • Military ID
  • Student Photo ID card from a South Dakota high school, or an accredited institution of higher education, including a university, college, or technical school located in South Dakota.
  • Tribal ID card, including a photo

If you do not have a Photo ID available, you can sign an affidavit at the polls.

What if I have a disability?

Several bills have been passed to ensure voters with disabilities still have reasonable access to privately cast their vote in South Dakota.
