To register as a voter in New Jersey, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of New Jersey for at least 30 days before Election Day
  • Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Not be in jail or on parole as a result of a conviction under state or federal law
  • Not have judged by a court to be mentally incompetent

Where do I vote on Election Day?

On Election Day, you can cast your ballot at your designated precinct voting location.

To find yours, visit the New Jersey Polling Place Finder.

All polling places in New Jersey are open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm local time. If you're in line when the polls close, you can still vote!

Can I vote by mail?

Any registered voter in New Jersey can request an absentee ballot to vote by mail!

Absentee ballot requests must be received by October 30th,
and returned no later than November 6th.

I'm in college away from home, which state do I vote in?

You can either register to vote in New Jersey or the state you're attending school in — but not both!

I'm not in the US right now, how do I vote?

If you are a military voter or a United States citizen living abroad, you should request an overseas absentee ballot.

What ID do I need to vote?

Voter ID is required if you're voting for the first time and haven't yet verified your identity. The ID must be current (not expired) and include your name and address. The following forms of ID are accepted:

  • Driver's license or photo ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • Military ID
  • Employee ID
  • Student ID
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck, paystub, or government check (Social Security, tax refund, etc.)
  • Other government-issued document which includes your name and voting address

What if I have a disability?

Several bills have been passed to ensure voters with disabilities still have reasonable access to privately cast their vote in New Jersey.
