Who can register to vote in Montana?

To register as a voter in Montana, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Montana and the county voting in for at least 30 days before election day
  • Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
  • Not be in a penal institution for a felony conviction
  • Not judged in a court to be of unsound mind

Where do I vote on Election Day?

On Election Day, you can cast your ballot at your designated precinct voting location.

To find yours, visit the Montana Polling Place Finder.

Polling times vary, and may start between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm. Polls close at 8:00 pm.

Can I vote by mail?

Any registered voter in Montana can request an absentee ballot to vote by mail!

Absentee ballot requests must be received by November 5th,
and returned no later than November 6th.

I'm in college away from home, which state do I vote in?

You can either register to vote in Montana or the state you're attending school in — but not both!

I'm not in the US right now, how do I vote?

If you are a military voter or a United States citizen living abroad, you should request an overseas absentee ballot.

What ID do I need to vote?

Voter ID is required to vote in Montana. Any photo or non-photo ID is acceptible, but it must show your name and current address.

Acceptible forms include

  • Current Montana Driver's license
  • Current US Passport
  • Current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or paystub
  • Voter confirmation notice

Several bills have been passed to ensure voters with disabilities still have reasonable access to privately cast their vote in Montana.
