Who can register to vote in Alabama?
To register as a voter in Alabama, you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be a resident of Alabama
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day
- Not have been officially found mentally incompetent
- Not convicted of a felony (unless voting rights have since been restored)

Where do I vote on Election Day?
On Election Day, you can cast your ballot at your designated precinct voting location.
To find yours, visit the Alabama Polling Place Finder.
All polling places will be open between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
Can I vote by mail?
Alabamians can only vote absentee if they:
- Will be outside your county on Election Day
- Are sick or disabled, preventing you from going to the polling place
- Are working a required shift of at least 10 hours spanning the open polling hours
Vote by mail in Alabama by requesting an absentee ballot.
Absentee ballot requests must be received by November 1st,
and returned no later than November 5th.
I'm in college away from home, which state do I vote in?
You can either register to vote in Alabama or the state you're attending school in — but not both!
I'm not in the US right now, how do I vote?
If you are a military voter or a United States citizen living abroad, you should request an overseas absentee ballot.
What ID do I need to vote?
Voter ID is required when voting. One of the following forms is acceptable:
- Alabama driver's license or photo ID
- Any other Photo ID issued by any U.S. State or Federal agency
- U.S. Passport
- Military ID
- Valid and current Student Photo ID card from a Alabama accredited institution of higher education, including a university, college, or technical school located in Alabama.
- Tribal Photo ID card
If you do not have a Photo ID available, you can sign an affidavit at the polls after being identified by two election officials.
You can also apply for a free photo ID.
